Jan Deconinck has been active as a market surveillance officer since 1996 on a wide scope of subjects including legal and scientific metrology; explosives, general product safety, safety of toys, safety of services, safety of lifts and the safety of gas distribution and transportation (pipelines).
 
He became the senior advisor on consumer safety to the Belgian Deputy Prime Minister in 2003 . 
 
He is currently Head of Department of Consumer Safety of the Belgian Ministry for Economic Affairs, responsible for public, consumer and product safety.
 
He is the immediate past Chairman of the Product Safety Enforcement Forum of Europe “Prosafe”. This is a non-profit organization established by market surveillance officers from various countries throughout the European Economic Area. Its primary objective is to improve the safety of users of products and services in Europe.

Jan holds a master’s degree in mechanical and electrotechnical engineering from Brussels Free University (VUB-1988) and is an auditor ISO/IEC 17020 qualified by the Belgian Accreditation Authority.
 
Jan is available as a short term senior expert on European and International Technical Regulations, specialized in helping create necessary National Quality Infrastructure.
